Kate McElwee

I make modern functional ceramics that celebrate the tactile nature of the raw material. Surface decoration includes graphic geometric elements that contrast with the naked clay surface, and more painterly surfaces that allude to natural landscapes.

A photographer by trade, I found ceramics shortly before the pandemic and it quickly became a form of joyful therapy. I enjoy art that is useful and interactive, and so much of my work is functional: mugs, dishes, cups, kitchenware and more.

In 2024 I am reintroducing non-functional raku-fired work. Raku is an exciting and high-risk method of firing and the results are never predictable. I am also starting to explore sculpture through small animals and larger coil-built forms including vases.

Originally from the UK, I’ve previously lived in London, Seattle, the Blue Mountains of Australia, Boston, Beverly and now Cohasset. I’m married to a scientist and sailor, and we have two fur kids: Jasper the hound mix and Jetty the Portuguese Water Dog. Please say hi if you run into us on our daily walks around Cohasset and Hull!
